2010 was definitely the year when many musical genres met their entertainment demise with sub-standard production quality and a lack of creative excitement in their songs. However, the Jamaican resilience that we’ve come to be proud of, shun through the native musical styles of Dancehall and Reggae and gave us a year of hype music which led to many lifestyle movements and trends. For the polls we conducted for the Best of Dancehall/Reggae 2010 from November 23 to December 24, 2010 Through the collaborative efforts with JamaicansMusic.com and Lynkageentertainment.com, it was clear that the year belonged to the self-proclaimed Boss of Jamaica, Adijah “Vybz Kartel†Palmer. Di Teacha has been at the centre of much controversy concerning his questionable complexion with people feeling the need to separate between Black Kartel and White Kartel. Let’s see the other winners that broke away from the pack and dominated their respective categories Best New Artiste [Female] :: Vanessa Bling aka Gaza Slim Fresh from the Gaza Empire, this lyricist is not only feisty but dedicated to monogamy as she constantly promotes in her popular songs of One Man and Nah Gi You Bun. What is particularly likeable about Gaza Slim is the fact that she can hold her on and only needs collaborations just to make the song more interesting. Best New Artiste [Male] :: Khago
Kartel himself proclaimed that the only person that can even reach his level is this man I-Octane and we sincerely agree. All you need to hear is the starting of the Orange Hill Riddim and you know that the vibe and eccentricity generated from Puff It is going to demand crazy pull up. He has bridged the gap between culture music and dancehall with stellar talent and ease. Song of the Year
[Dancehall] :: Vybz Kartel ft Popcaan n Vanessa Bling Clarks The Clarks trilogy not only started the revival of a fashion trend but confirmed the fact that Kartel is a marketing maven. The song dominated airways both locally and internationally and demanded much to the delight of retailers islandwide who proclaimed that when the song came out, Clarks produced by CR203 Records started to sell like hot bread. Song of the Year [Reggae] :: I Octane- My Life Hardships are at the core of this song and it captures the order of the day in Jamaica which added to its power and magnestism. The raspy voice of I-Octane really added to the sincerity and verbal dexterity of the song produced by Dj. Frass records which rightfully deserves this title. Dj of the year [Female] :: Spice
Dj of the year [Male] :: Vybz Kartel His dominance in 2010 was rooted in his revival of a fashion trend, the starting of a new one (straight jeans and fitted) and his amazing repertoire which spanned from the Clarks trilogy to his get wild track Dumpa Truck. Recording Artiste of the year :: Vybz Kartel Is there much more to say about him? He has undeniable talent which transcends the boundaries of music and shows up in his marketing skills (Clarks and Cake Soap) and ability to turn controversy into a beneficial thing. He is the epitome of whether it’s bad or good things people are saying, the bottom line is they are talking about you. Riddim of the year [Dancehall] :: One Day Riddim With tracks such as I’m Ok, Nah Sell Out and Wifey Walk Out, this riddim produced Seanizzle records by provided the platform for many popular songs this year and with a close to 100% hype rating for the songs, it is no wonder it won. Riddim of the year [Reggae] :: My Life Riddim With a title track from I-Octane and a power collaboration with Tarrus Riley and Agent Sasco, the tracks on this riddim produced by Dj. Frass records capture the intricate elements of reggae with the promotion of the ideals of resilience in the time of hardship and the complexities of love. Producer of the year [Reggae] :: Don Corleonie His signature producing style is seen in riddims such as Major Riddim and what makes him the phenomenal producer he is, is his talented way of fusing the emotion and notably different sound of reggae in his riddims. What is particularly noteworthy about Corleonie is the stellar work he has done on some of the tracks on Protege’s musical journey The Seven Year Itch. Producer of the year [Dancehall] :: Stephen “Di Genius†McGreggor His nickname “Di Genius†is stemmed from the fact that he leaves his stamp of brilliance on his riddims such as the Championship Riddim which is definitely a party starter. Some people might say that he is repetitive in his style of producing but as the saying goes, why fix something if it isn’t broken. Best group/duo of the year :: Voicemail In spite of the tragic loss of their group member Oneil, they managed to continue their superb musical prowess which captures the very infectious dance craze style. This was displayed with their title track on the Baheba riddim produced by Don Corleonie. Best collaboration of the year [Dancehall] :: Vybz Kartel ft. Popcaan and Vanessa Bling Clarks This track produced by CR203 Records demonstrated the musical power and might of the Gaza Empire as this song received musical acclaim both locally and internationally. The intro of the song was used in everyday conversations with people saying “Wah gwan popcaan..deh yah enuh hotskull.†This showed that this song influenced every facet of Jamaican lifestyle from music to fashion to slang.Best collaboration of the year [Reggae] :: Jah Cure feat Phyllisia Ross- Unconditonal Love The fascination with this song starts with the serenade of the guitar in the instrumental and climaxes with the creative and impacting lyrics. This song captures the importance of love being unconditional in order for it to blossom into a lasting bond and with Jah Cure’s raspy vocals; it sounds all the more convincing. Best whine up/Brukout tune of the year [Dancehall] :: Vybz Kartel – Dumpa
truck and That sweet yuh This song showcased Kartel’s out of the box wordplay which
can be summed up in the line of the song that says “Set good like the ice inna
freezer.†The Smoking Riddim CR203 Records itself is perfect whining music and with the
master lyricist’s style of delivery, the magnetism and explosive nature of the
song draws everybody to the dance floor. Best “weed†song of the year :: Vybz Kartel feat Popcaan - HOT Grabba The polls reflect differently from what we think is the Best Weed Song of the Year which is Puff It by I-Octane produced by Cash Flow records. All feelings aside, Hot Grabba was another infectious song from Di Teacha himself, Vybz Kartel which much like most of his songs, serves the primary purpose of getting crazy forward at parties and creating a vibe. Music Video of the Year :: Vybz Kartel feat Russian – Jeans n Fitted With the immensely popular video, "Jeans n Fitted" (Vybz Kartel ft Russian) reaching over 2.5 million views on youtube, RoadBlock Films has definitely left their mark on Dancehall & Reggae Videos in 2010. The video highlighted a social standoff being bridged by the fashion trend of straight jeans, a white T Shirt, a rosary and a fitted cap. The treatment for the video was simple but effective in conveying that whether it’s Portmore or Uptown, the image and swag is the same. This track was produced by Head Concussion Records
